BARRY T. WINSTON: Criminal defense work involves people's freedom and occasionally their lives. For 98 percent of the people who come to see me, this is their first encounter with the criminal justice system. They have no idea what to expect. They need to know how important it is that they immediately consult with a lawyer who has some experience in defending people accused of crimes. One of the most important parts of the job is to learn everything that it's possible to learn about the case, to consider the case among other things from the prosecutor's point of view, and to construct a defense based on all of those considerations. I've done it enough so that I am comfortable in a courtroom. That gives me the confidence to believe that I can at least have a reasonably good chance of persuading 12 folks that my version of what ought to happen is what ought to happen.
